WordPress: lame performance when posting, editor loses connection and LinkWhisper

Speed problems in WordPress, LinkWhisper plugin suspected.

We have had performance problems for some time now when creating new content on our blog. Saving in the editor took forever, first a minute, later even up to three. Most recently, the connection to the editor kept dropping out, making it difficult to add new content.

The connection was interrupted. Saving has been disabled until the connection is restored. This post is saved in your browser, just in case.

The reason for this remained a mystery at first. In principle, the article was directly online, only the feedback in the editor took a while. In the developer console, you could see that various requests from the server were also not being answered.

Troubleshooting, deactivate all plugins

In the end, I deactivated all plugins as a test. My first suspicion was that WPML was the translation plugin. After all plugins were deactivated, I ran a new test and lo and behold, the editor ran smoothly again. So I reactivated the plugins one by one and tested them again. WPML first and everything ran smoothly here too.

In the end it turned out that nothing worked properly after activating the LinkWhisper plugin. The plugin makes suggestions for internal links to blog articles. It’s quite possible that it can’t cope with the large number of blog posts. In our other blog, we are talking about several thousand blog articles.

Conclusion

Plugin deactivated, everything is back on track for now. It’s hard to say whether it’s a general problem with the plugin or whether other plugins and configurations are causing these page effects. But it shows once again that you always have to be careful what additional things you configure into WordPress.
